1. You find out your husband has an illness that, while temporary, is still serious and requires him to go to appointments often and take time off of work. Flexibility required, which working at home provides.
2. You also are having some medical issues which make it necessary for you to take a break, chill out and rest when you really need to.
3. You have goals that require an income beyond what the traditional “pay scale” is for what you were educated to do. Non-profit work is not known for long-term financial success for the most part!
4. You see other moms and dads struggling to balance it all, complete with long commutes and office politics. It’s tough out there for working parents, and the other things they have to do to have a job (commute, lunch expenses, shopping for work clothes, bringing kids to child care) aren’t recognized enough as a real part of the job they do.
5. You realize the great network of other work at home parents that you’ve discovered online. In particular the other great WAHM bloggers nominated at Sparkplugging and the awesome community at Mom Masterminds.
This year has been a tough one for me personally…adjusting to having my first child, being home with him in a somewhat isolated sense (hubby works weird hours, so I don’t have that “hand off” time around dinner time like lots of other SAHM’s/WAHM’s) dealing with illness in our family and our ever-present search for our new home.
But working at home has never been something I’ve had to “deal with” or a decision I’ve regretted. If anything, even though it is difficult to have your work life and personal life under the same roof, working at home has afforded me the flexibility to handle these different issues as they have arisen.
So thanks to the WAHM community for making this year wonderful!! If you are a WAHM, why does it work for you? What makes you happy you work from home?
