Sell Twenty Things to Twenty People

by Jen Knox

Most people would agree that an increase in income of $400 a week would make a significant difference in lifestyle. An extra $1600 or so a month is relative of course….for some, it’s a mortgage payment. For others, it’s two mortgage payments! For still others, it’s not even close to covering a mortgage payment.

Regardless, how does $400 a week really break down? If you wanted to earn $400 a week, you might think, “It’s so abstract…$400….how do I determine if that is a goal I can actually achieve? More importantly, what would I have to do in order to earn that?”

I like to break things down to make them easier to digest. Income, or prospective income, is no different. Here’s a way of looking at what a $400 increase in income per week really looks like:

$400 a week is the same as:

*Selling 20 things for $20 a piece. (Things, products or even hours!)
*Selling 40 things for $10 a piece.
*Selling 10 things for $40 a piece.

Whether you are selling your time in billable hours, an information product, a set-fee service or a physical product, breaking things down like this can sometimes clarify what the next step is for someone wanting to reach this or any other income goal.

What can you sell for $20 to 20 people? Or the converse, where can you find 20 people to buy 20 of something you already have or create? Sometimes looking at a goal in these bite-sized pieces can not only make the goal seem more attainable, but also help you brainstorm ways in which to make it happen. You just might develop a new idea out of the process!

I love these breakdowns and totally agree. My mind is stuck in perpetual paralysis mode if I think of doing anything large. Sometimes it’s making a big amount, sometimes it’s tackling a big project with many moving parts. But once you listed out the smaller steps they don’t seem to overwhelming /scary anymore.

Thanks for the nice comment, Lynette. I think anytime you can look at something in pieces, it immediately brings the do-ability level up!

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who thinks like this! I also get into paralysis mode when I try to think too “big picture”!

Breaking down a goal into smaller pieces is great advice whether in earning an extra $400 a month or losing 40 pounds. It reminds me of the old question,” How do you eat an elephant?”. Just like you eat anything else, one bite at a time.
